Every now and again Intel leapfrogs and AMD gets caught out cold. This has again happened in the past 1-2 chip generations costing AMD market share and $$$. I always feel for AMD when that happens. They do a lot of good stuff and without AMD we’d surely not be where we are today. They create a minimum of competition with Intel.

AMD has introduced their new 45nm Opteron CPUs called Shanghai. Let’s hope it turns out to be the success they need to get back in the game. From a technological point of view the numbers look very good. The energy efficiency (compared to Xeons) is very good. Looking at the server two processor + VMware market that becomes very interesting. I know I’d love one to run all our VM stuff on at work.

Maybe now even Apple will get interested. They already chose Nvidia over Intel….
